The air is cool up here in the mountains of Maricao, Puerto Rico. we are 3,000 ft above sea level and taking a deep breath of that clean air. The sun filters through tall shade trees, painting the coffee trees in dots of light. You can hear the rustle of leaves, the flutter of wings, and if you’re lucky the call of macaws and other rare exotic Puerto Rican birds you won’t find anywhere else in the world.

As we walk through Hacienda Iluminada, the coffee trees aren’t standing in bare rows, they live under a cathedral of green, surrounded by native Puerto Rican trees that have been rooted here for centuries.
Above you, the guaraguao (Guarea guidonia) spreads its broad canopy, casting gentle shade that slows coffee cherry ripening for richer flavor. Its small flowers draw pollinators, while its deep roots hold the soil in place during heavy mountain rains.
Beside it stands the yagrumo (Cecropia schreberiana), its large, hand-shaped leaves rustling in the breeze. This pioneer tree is one of the first to regrow after hurricanes, restoring the forest quickly so wildlife can return — a living example of resilience.
The ausubo (Manilkara bidentata) towers even higher, its dense, dark wood prized for centuries in Puerto Rican culture. Slow-growing and long-lived, it’s a living time capsule, sheltering generations of birds in its branches while its fallen leaves enrich the soil naturally.

The Puerto Rican Tody (Todus mexicanus), called San Pedrito by locals. Barely the size of your thumb, it hovers like a tiny jewel, catching insects in midair. Its quick, metallic “tik-tik” call blends with the soft rustle of leaves.
Above us, the Puerto Rican Bullfinch (Melopyrrha portoricensis) perches on a branch, its black body and orange throat glowing against the green canopy. It’s a tireless seed spreader, helping native trees regenerate year after year.
From the tallest shade trees, you might hear the slow, hollow tapping of the Puerto Rican Woodpecker (Melanerpes portoricensis), the island’s only woodpecker species, searching for insects under bark. Its drumming echoes softly through the coffee grove.
And then, if you’re lucky, you’ll catch the shimmer of a Green Mango Hummingbird (Anthracothorax viridis) hovering at a coffee flower, sipping nectar while pollinating the blossoms that will become next season’s harvest.
