Closed-Loop Water Systems and The Circular Economy
Our commitment to carbon sequestration extends to how we manage our water. At one of our coffee farm tours you will see how we incorporate closed-loop water system and a circular economy approach to processing our specialty coffee beans.
After we hand-pick each coffee cherry for the perfect single-origin coffee, we use a honey processing method that keeps the coffee's natural mucilage intact, dramatically reducing the amount of water needed compared to traditional methods.
Any wastewater that is produced is then funneled into a natural water treatment plant right on our farm. First, through natural sedimentation, gravity pulls heavy solids and pulp to the bottom of our water basins. The clearer water then flows into a series of plant-based filtration pools, where the roots of native plants and beneficial microorganisms break down any remaining sugary residue.
This innovative practice ensures no polluted water harms our local rivers, and it's a key part how we impact our local communities in Maricao.
